B R Mohan Raj is currently heading the ‘Centre for Special Purpose Machines & Machine Tools’ at Central Manufacturing Technology Institute, Bangalore.

He holds a degree in Engineering from PDA College of Engineering, Gulbarga University, Karnataka. He is further trained in ‘Precision Machine Design’ at Cranfield University, UK, ‘New Product Development’ at AOTS, Japan and ‘Integrated Product Development’ at Steinbeis Foundation, Germany. He is also a ‘Visionary Leader For Manufacturing (VLFM)’.

  • Design & Development of Special Industrial products / machinery (TRL3 to TRL8)
  • Translational R&D toward addressing technology gaps in Industrial machinery

Path breaking projects:

  • Design & development of High Speed Shuttleless Rapier Loom
  • Design & development of Continuous Mixing, Batch Mixing & Extrusion equipment
  • Design & development of Single Point Diamond Turning Machine
  • Design & development of special purpose machinery for machine tool, ship building, automotive & printing industry.
  • Design consultancy for machine building industries.

His professional representations include serving as member in BIS sectional committee and in review committees on projects sponsored by DHI, DST & PSA’s Office.

He has published several technical papers on Diamond Turning Machine & Precision Diamond Turning, Design of Micro-machining Centre, V-Map for New Product Development Process, Analysis of Planetary Drive Mixer systems, Continuous Mixing system & Extruder, etc.

At CMTI, he has championed the cause of “Design in India’ and ‘Make in India’ over the past 30 years for the Machine Tools, Process Machinery and the Textile Machinery sectors. He has been involved in a spectrum of projects under Special Purpose Machine Development activity, Design Consultancy & Design Evaluation. He has also championed PLM (Product Lifecycle Management Tools) Implementation at CMTI.

His current & future areas of work involvement include addressing technology gaps in the Capital Goods machinery sector – high speed weaving machinery, extrusion systems, multi-tasking machine tools, flow forming machine, etc.
