Central Manufacturing Technology Institute was established in the year 1962 by the Government of India. The Institute is located at Tumkur Road, Bengaluru. The Institute was formerly known as Central Machine Tool Institute. It is basically a Research and Development organization for Machine Tools and Production Engineering. The main objective of the institute is to provide support to a wide spectrum of industry. The Institute was set up as a Sectoral Information Centre under ISSAT scheme of Government of India.
CMTI has the mandate to foster innovation in manufacturing technology, provide a collaborative environment for new product and process developments, develop ‘industry ready’ engineering talent and service industrial aspirations in manufacturing technology advancement.
A concerted policy deployment move by various national level stakeholders like the Department of Heavy Industries (DHI), Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises Government of India, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), Department of Science & Technology (DST), etc. has opened up new exciting avenues for expanding the horizon of Research activities of CMTI.
The Institute is striving to build a viable and sustainable ‘Technology Development Platform’ through a basket of new initiatives meant to provide opportunities for talented Engineers to blossom into futuristic technology developers of India.
The Institute has modern laboratories and facilities for carrying out Industry application oriented research in the areas of CAD, CAM, CAE, CIM, Ultra Precision, Micro and Nano-Technology, Rapid Prototyping/Tooling, CNC Application, Virtual Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Hydraulics, Noise & Vibration, IT in Manufacturing, etc.
