Shanmugaraj is currently heading Additive and Special Manufacturing Processes (ASMP) at Central Manufacturing Technology Institute, Bengaluru.

He holds Bachelor of Engineering degree from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, India.

Areas of specialization are Design & Development of Embedded Controllers, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Computerised Numerical Controllers (CNC), Specialised Controllers for Aerospace, Defence and Space applications etc.

He is trained in Design & Development of Computerised Numerical Controller as fellow of UNDP at Bridgeport Machines Inc. USA for a period of 6 months and undergone training at Oklahoma State University, USA for a period of 2 months in the field of Development of Thermal Error Compensation modules for Machine Tool applications.

Also he has visited University of Michigan, Wein State University, Lawrence Technological University in Detroit, USA and also the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Washington, USA in connection with collaborative R&D projects.

He is in CMTI for the past 34 years, and currently working on the following areas:

• Development of Test rigs and Controllers for Aerospace applications.
• Development of Machine Health Management Systems
• Interfacing / Retrofitting Controllers for special purpose machines
• Faculty for Training Courses on Sensors, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) & Computerised Numerical Controllers (CNC), Embedded Controllers and Closed Loop Control Systems.
